Members of Armagh Menssheds delivered an activity session for people attending one of the Chest Heart and Stoke mornings that take regularly place in the consortium’s hall. Meenssheds members brought along materials and tools to help with the construction of bird boxes which those involved will be able to paint and keep. The Menssheds project co-ordinator Mr.Stephen McCleary remarked afterwards that both groups benefitted from the experience and hoped to repeat in the near future.
The West Armagh Consortium is organising a number of workshops designed to assist its community activists on a number of aspects that will benefit themselves and the group to which they belong.
There will be three distinct sessions.
All workshops will take place in Sherry’s Field. Groups are encouraged to send along representatives. They will be of benefit both personally and organisationally.
Vandalism or anti-social behaviour, whatever people like to call it has always been a problem in Armagh. However, most would agree that with the increase in drug abuse that the level of vandalism and the destructiveness of those involved has sadly increased.
Over the years different locations have come to the fore and the residents living in these areas have borne the brunt of the activities of young people high on drink, drugs and more increasingly now both. Areas like ‘the tunnel’, ‘college field’, ‘Callan River Footbridge’ are but three to mention. Added to this list has to be Sherry’s Field Sports Complex where for several years now there has been an ongoing problem with vandalism and general anti-social behaviour. This has steadily grown to the extent now where local residents are literally at their wits end over it. Weekend parties lasting into the early hours, underage drinking, drug taking and drug sellers, destruction of property, increased noise levels and physical attacks are a regular fact of life in this area.
Boot camp got off to a start this morning in Clarkes Fitness on the Ballycrummy Road. Covering four weeks in May the camp is split into two sessions, mornings and evenings. Four weeks of intense training are on offer to those who have signed up. We wish them luck.
There was a slight change to the times in that the evening sessions will now start at 8pm instead of 7pm.This was to accommodate the use of the facilities. Given the changeable weather those involve don the camp may well be grateful that indoor facilities are at hand for all classes.
The evening session gets underway
The four week boot camp organised by West Armagh Consortium came to an end last Thursday. In total 30 people availed of the programme that included morning and evening sessions. While the individual 16 classes undertaken by all involved was certainly arduous there was definitely a sense of achievement among the 30 boot campers who persevered. The sessions took place in Clarke Fitness and we are indebted to Conor and his team for the hard work they also put in.
Congratulation to all the boot campers who are definitely now a more leaner and fitter bunch. Some have indicated that they will continue with a programme of physical exercise. The programme was funded by the NRPB’s Growing Communities Programme under its promotion of Health and well-being within the community. We are currently looking at the possibility of doing a repeat programme later in the year. Again ,well done to all involved.

Members of the Association of Bulgarian Culture and Education (ABCE) who were presented with sets of traditional costumes, books and administration and office equipment by WAC Chairman Stephen Fields.
Also pictured is Roma Carlisle from SPRING who was also received administration and office equipment. The equipment was purchased through an under spend generated in the SELB’s Youth Engagement programmes. The consortium successfully applied for the grant and in association with the two groups purchased the equipment and costumes
