One of the aims and objectives of the West Armagh Consortium is the promotion of Irish culture. It aims to create and support opportunities for local people to engage and participate in Irish Culture and develops platforms, for local people to present their cultural work to wider audiences. It is about raising awareness around the culture in the context of a shared and better future to develop greater tolerance, understanding and respect for our indigenous cultural traditions.

Irish culture includes customs and traditions, language, dance, music, art, literature, folklore, cuisine and sports. You might have an interest in finding out more about our culture and hopefully we can share some of the smaller things that make our culture so unique through this website.

The Irish Language

The promotion of the Irish Language is an important aspect of the West Armagh Consortium's aims and objectives. An Teanga Gaeilge has made great strides in Armagh over recent years. There is a thriving and vibrant Irish speaking community in Armagh. Several groups have been responsible for this promotion and in recent years that promotion has been enhanced with the establishment of Cairde Teo who operated An Siopa Cultúr located in Armagh Shopping Mall. Cairde Teo and West Armagh Consortium have worked on several ventures and there are strong links between both groups.

Irish Culture - A Simple Overview

Leprechaun tales, contrary to popular belief are not well known in Ireland and are perceived by many to be a caricature of a minor tale in the culture of Ireland. It is very popular overseas and this is probably the reason why it figurers in to a large degree in Irish Folklore.

According to the tales, a mischievous fairy type creature in emerald green clothing who when not playing tricks spend all their time busily making shoes, the Leprechaun is said to have a pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow, and if ever captured by a human it has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for release.
